New Ulm is less than two hours from Minneapolis/St. Paul and travel from Rochester, MN, takes about the same time. What a great destination to stay at a bed and breakfast, tour a vineyard and a brewery, shop the unique specialty shops, and enjoy the cuisine. Quilt Show 2010 - New Ulm, Minnesota

On March 26 & 27, 2010 the Prairie Piecemakers Quilt Guild proudly presents Quilt Show 2010. Plans are being made and hopes are that there will be over 300 quilts on display. Share a unique fabric experience with specialty shops, demonstrations, door prizes and a parade of quilts. There will also be a ladies lunch available. The show will be located at 15 North State Street in New Ulm (formerly the NU Middle School), hours: Friday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Make a weekend of fun with your lady friends and stay with us at the Deutsche Strasse Bed and Breakfast, for good food, conversation and the comforts of home. Schell's 150th Anniversary Pub Crawl in New Ulm, MN!

Come one and all on Saturday evening, January 2, to stroll the streets of New Ulm and visit eight pubs and sample eight of Schell's, brews including the anniversary beer, Hopfenmalz. The newly introduced beer will be available after 8 p.m. at all of the pubs after the ceremonial keg is tapped. At your first stop, pick up a Schell's Pub Crawl Card. For each visit and new brew sampled, have the card punched. Once participants have collected all 8 stamps from each of the 8 pubs, and have purchased their bottle of the Hopfenmalz (for only $1.50), they will be able to collect the Schell's 150th Anniversary t-shirt at the Schell's Beer Bus! Cross Country Skiing or Snowshoeing at Flandrau State Park

We have snow! New Ulm has seven inches of new snow and a great state park with groomed trails just on the edge of the town. The park rents both the cross country skis and snow shoes. Come spend the weekend and enjoy the tranquility of being out in the woods and getting exercise. After a great day of being out-of-doors, come stay with us at the Deutsche Strasse Bed and Breakfast and enjoy some warm apple cider or hot chocolate while sitting in front of a warm fireplace. Get up the next morning, enjoy a delicious breakfast, and go out again for another day of nature.

Black Friday Is Not Just About Shopping

In the quaint and charming town of New Ulm, Minnesota, shopping isn't necessarily the focus of the day. At 6 p.m. on Friday, November 27, Santa comes into town in the Annual Parade of Lights. If you go downtown you will see this parade of about 50 entries and participants most definitely use their imaginations when designing their floats. After the parade, A Live Nativity is being presented at George's Ballroom, which is found on Center Street, towards the east from Minnesota Street;the parade route. Christmas not only changed the world's calendar and created a huge holiday, it also changed people's lives. Come experience an old fashioned Christmas. Get away from the crowds. Annual Winemaker's Dinner at Morgan Creek Vineyards

Romans March on New Ulm!

Starting on Thursday, September 17, New Ulm, Minnesota is celebrating the 2000th anniversary of the victory of the Roman Legions being ambushed by a coalition of Hermann's tribal forces in a series of running battles in the Teutoburg Forest in northern Germany. This decisive battle curtailed Roman expansion between the Rhine and Elbe rivers shaping foundations for modern Europe. To learn more about the celebration see: www.hermannmonument.com. New Ulm is known for its many celebrations and this promises to be a fun time as well as unique in that there will be a re-enactment of the battle and "Barbarians" are invited to participate in the battle on Saturday, September 19, 2009.

Southern Minnesota Fall Foliage

The Fall Foliage in Southern Minnesota is just beginning to appear. Make plans to see nature's beautiful display by driving along the Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway. Just last week, one of our guests at the Deutsche Strasse Bed and Breakfast informed us that the drive along the "bottom road" between New Ulm and Fort Ridgley State Park is one of the most beautiful drives in the country! This is from someone who has traveled the USA. On your drive, be sure to stop at the Harkin Store. It is 9 miles northwest of New Ulm and is open only on the weekends after Labor Day until MEA weekend, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. The cost is $3.00 to see a glimpse of a town and time that have faded like a steamboat on a foggy day.

Labor Day Weekend Fun - Flotilla on the River

For those who wish to do something out of the ordinary, come to New Ulm, MN, for a grass roots festival called Riverblast. Activities start at Riverside Park in New Ulm at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 4, 2009. There will be free entertainment and music, food, a fishing contest, crafts, a run/walk, a bike tour and the Flotilla on the River.
